Perception and Reborn Dolls

Yinka's question reminded me how much I’ve wanted to post a lengthy blog entry about perception and reborn dolls.

Intro and Background:

I wrote a blog entry last summer about African-American versus biracial titled, “Reborn Ethnic, AA, A/A, Black, Biracial by Brooke Nicole”. (scroll down to read)

That particular blog entry was published to address collectors and artists who frequently wrote to me suggesting the dolls I created and labeled African-American “looked biracial” or “were biracial”, and therefore should only be described as biracial. The writers explained that the dolls did not fit into their [clearly limited] ideas of how African-Americans look.

That blog entry briefly explained why I see many of my reborn dolls as African-American. I gave my short definition of African-American/black American; and I used photographs of my colorful family members and celebrities to illustrate the dynamic range of facial features, hair textures and skin tones within the African-American race.

The following blog entry, “Perception and Reborn Dolls” expands on that topic.

Perception and Reborn Dolls

Reborn dolls may look real, but they are not real. They do not have a race or an ethnicity because they do not have parents. Reborn dolls are replicas of live human babies and children, and as I pointed out to Yinka, they can represent any human who bears the same features.

If I describe a doll as African-American, that’s what I perceive it to be. Others may see the doll as something else based on their own personal experiences, and that’s understandable. But to tell someone that their perception is incorrect based on your own perception is absurd.

As a newborn, my brown-haired, fair-skinned, 100% black/African American daughter was mistaken for a Caucasian baby at the hospital where she was born (scroll down to see a photo of my little diva). What should have been the most congratulatory days of my life turned out to be the exact opposite! I was subjected to snotty remarks and unwarranted, icy glares due to individual perceptions (and prejudices, but I digress). Those individuals obviously had never been exposed to fair-skinned African Americans. Perception is based on who you've seen, and who you know.

Just as I shared with Yinka, facial features, skin tones and hair textures are shared across ethnicities, especially during the newborn and infant stages. It’s quite an interesting concept! I see artist-labeled Caucasian reborns that uncannily resemble my daughter’s newborn photographs every day. I’d never dream of writing to these artists hinting that their dolls are not what they, as the artists, perceive them to be.

Thanks so much for reading! Stay tuned for a blog entry about the history of fair-skinned African Americans.

Q and A Time!

From Yinka at IP: 76.255.18*.**

I am in love with your reborns. I know you are booked for a while but i was looking to order one. Do you put in breathing devises? And also do you make Asian, Native-American, and Indian reborns as well?

Answer:

Hi there!

Thanks for writing and for the kind words!  My ethnic
reborn dolls can represent all non-Caucasian ethnicities including African (not black or African-American), Asian, Native-American, Indian, and Hispanic based on aesthetics.  My dolls all have non-Caucasian skin tones, dark eyes and dark hair of varying textures.  Facial features, skin tones and hair textures are shared across ethnicities, especially during the newborn and infant stages.

No, I’m sorry; I do not use breathing devices.  Breathing devices compromise the huggable feeling of these life-like dolls.  The doll looks real but when picked up, you would feel a hard box in the torso area. I prefer to keep the torso soft.  All of my new doll mommies have commented on how cuddly and wonderful my dolls feel!  :)

Thanks again for writing and I hope to hear from you in the future about a
baby doll.

Painting Service Unlikely To Continue!

Hello All,

Since the announcement of the painting service hold, I’ve received numerous questions about whether or not the waiting list will reopen. Honestly, it doesn’t look good. I'm still working on a new painting setup to avoid inhaling the harmful fumes, and it's proving to be costly and confusing right now. Changing a three year-old setup is difficult. Thank goodness for the staff of Simply Reborn Dolls for informing reborn artists.

Over the next few weeks, I will be moving furniture and boxes filled with reborning supplies. I am planning to conduct several tests using a turkey roaster, and I do not feel comfortable using kits that do not belong to me as guinea pigs.

Painting Service On Hold!

Hello All,

Due to the realization that heated vinyl fumes are hazardous to my health, I am placing the painting service on hold.  I will update everyone should I decide to take painting orders in the future.  While I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, I’m sure we all agree that health and safety comes first.

My fellow reborn artists, I urge you to take heed of this most serious development.  I plan to go above and beyond to alter my reborning environment, and I encourage everyone to do the same.  This matter should not be taken lightly.

NEW Doll Kit DAXTON by Sandy Faber!

One of my dreams has finally come true!  :)  I’ve always wanted a reborn kit by the super talented Sandy Faber and guess what?  I’m getting one!  Sandy’s chubby babies always make me smile, and Daxton is no exception.  Daxton will make the PERFECT ethnic reborn, I guarantee.

I am planning to preorder little Daxton tonight after my daughter goes to bed.  Nine o’clock can’t come soon enough for me.  lol

Sandy says she is planning to release more kits in the future.  I hope there is an Asian kit planned.  Fingers crossed!

New Doll Kit by Gudrun Legler coming soon!

Monday, January 26, 2009

Omigosh! What a darling face. Baby Nina is an upcoming doll kit by artist Gudrun Legler. Gudrun is one of my top 10 favorite sculptors! She also sculpted the popular Nils and Pauline kits for Nicky Creation. Isn’t Nina adorable? I think she and Nils will make great twins.

Gudrun posted that she had a few problems with Nina's mold and that she'll have the prototypes soon. I can't wait for this one. She is a must have for me!

DOLLS Magazine article!

Hello Friends!

I am pleased to announce that my babies and I are featured in the February 2009 issue of DOLLS magazine!

I love the way the article turned out. The writer of the article is Debbie Behan Garrett. She is the author of Black Dolls, A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion. I think Debbie and DOLLS magazine did an excellent job producing the article.

Click here read the article. I hope everyone is having a great new year so far!

Soft Vinyl Middleton Reborn Doll Kits!

I signed on this afternoon and much to my surprise, Middleton Doll Company is now offering soft vinyl kits for reborn artists! I can’t wait to get my hands on these two kits. The Joyful Heart sculpt is one of my favorite sculpts by Reva Schick, and Eva Helland’s new Asian sculpt is to die for!

I am so excited, if you can’t already tell. I just may have to come out of retirement to offer these two reborned kits for sale. We’ll see. *wink wink*
